Layla Maurer is the Staff Attorney for the Library Futures program at NYU’s Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy, where she is helping to develop the legal tools needed for a program aimed towards facilitating more and better access to digital resources and media for use and lending in libraries. Layla has also worked as an attorney for Wizards of the Coast advising on licensing, brand development, and digital game strategy.
Before becoming an attorney, Layla worked in digital media, content systems, and higher education. Her roles included systems support, database management, and product testing for platforms focused on digital content delivery and fair use in academic settings. This combination of technical and instructional experience continues to shape her collaborative approach and her focus on long-term, adaptable legal frameworks for digital and creative projects.
Layla earned her M.L.I.S. from Kent State University and her J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where she concentrated in law, technology, and the arts. Her publications include writing on artificial intelligence, Section 230, and trademark issues in esports and digital culture.
